The UNC "REDI" Program

Our REDI Program embodies the stated goals of the Wood Center:

  • To Develop and Maintain an Engaged Community
  • To Foster and Support an Experimental Learning Environment
  • To Prepare Community Members for Sustained Career Success

The UNC REDI Intern Program Promotes the following Objectives:

  • To work with Commercial Real Estate partner companies in an industry-changing program to increase overall diverse applicant pool within Commercial Real Estate at the university level
  • To gain a meaningful internship experience through pre-internship training for interviews, gaining industry knowledge, and quantitative skills preparation
  • By working full-time for 8 weeks minimum to gain valuable real-world work experience
  • To participate in program feedback and share experiences with other students across UNC’s campus

Our interns gain a sense of belonging and growth with support of the Wood Center and Industry engagement.  Starting with our boot camp preparation classes, interns meet regularly during their internship to discuss areas of improvement and actionable activities to strengthen their communication skills, advance their technical skills and expand their recruitment relationships.

Sonia CastilloSonia Castillo
Undergraduate Business Program Class of 2023
My name is Sonia Patricia Castillo (but I go by Patty), and I am a sophomore from Tegucigalpa, Honduras at the Kenan-Flagler Business School, studying Business Administration with a concentration in Real Estate and minoring in Urban Studies and City Planning. I’ve always had an interest in this industry as I spent many summers working in my father's company and currently plan on pursuing a career in real estate investment and development. I'm grateful for this opportunity, through the Wood Center, to learn more this summer through working at Cousins Properties in their Charlotte office in Summer 2021.

Hi, my name is Julian Esquer and I am from Charlotte, NC. I am majoring in Business Administration with a minor in Mathematics. I discovered my interest in Real Estate when I was young as I have been exposed to my dad who owns a real estate brokerage firm and works closely with investors. My interest lie at the intersection between real estate and finance and I plan to pursue a career which allows me to do both. The REDI program provided me the opportunity to explore my interest in commercial real estate and helped me develop my alumni network. This summer I will be interning with Berkeley Capital Advisors in Charlotte, NC as part of their shopping center team.

I am a Business major with a concentration in Real Estate and I have a double minor in French and Environmental Sciences & Studies. Hi! My name is Karen Guo and I'm a sophomore at UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School studying Business Administration with a minor in Computer Science. Outside of my studies, I'm involved in UNC's Kamikazi hip hop dance team, where I serve on the executive board in addition to being a dancer. I also love traveling, nature, and anything music related. I grew up helping with my parents' business, and the relationships built through that translated into an interest in real estate, which is a very relationship-oriented industry. The REDI program fast-tracked me on a path to pursue my interest in commercial real estate, and I'm excited to be matched with OTO Development and intern with them in the summer of 2021!

Hello, my name is Donovan Herndon and I am a sophomore from Hillsborough, NC. I am a student at UNC’s Kenan-Flagler Business School pursuing a degree in business administration and planning to minor in urban studies. Throughout my freshman year I started to expand my knowledge of commercial real estate and I became increasingly interested at the prospect of me pursuing a career in this industry. After hearing about the REDI program, I knew I had to take advantage of the opportunity to learn more about CRE from a more hands-on approach. Thanks to the REDI program, I have secured an internship with Greystar Realty Partners as a Summer Investment Analyst in their Charleston, SC office!

Hi, my name is Ajani McIntosh. I am a sophomore from Sylva, North Carolina, a small town in the Smoky Mountains. At UNC I am involved with the Black Entrepreneur Initiative at UNC as the club's treasurer and co-founder, as well as the non-profit Mission: Scholarship Inc. as the VP of External Affairs and Development. My interest in real estate started when I watched my mother start her own real estate business and start to have success in the field. I copied her and she helped me buy a mobile home and rent it out, starting my journey in the world of real estate. Seven years later, and I still own my mobile home and have the amazing opportunity to grow my knowledge interning at Beacon Partners in Charlotte this summer!

Hi, my name is Catherine Sun, and I am a sophomore at UNC double majoring in Business Administration and Statistics and Analytics. On-campus I am involved with UNC Ascend, work as an RA, and helped plan Kenan-Flagler's 36th Annual Symposium this year. In my free time, I love ice skating and hiking on trails around the triangle area. I've always had an interest in urban planning and community involvement so when I learned about the REDI program I was immediately interested. I'm excited to intern with Childress Klein this summer and learn more about real estate and the market in the Charlotte area!

I’m Robbie Tillman, a second-year Computer Science major from Columbus, GA with an intended minor in Business Administration. I have a keen interest in business, technology, and solving interesting problems both big and small. I plan to continue my entrepreneurial journey upon graduation and use the upcoming summer as an opportunity to gain an insider’s perspective on the various aspects of real estate deals while contributing to the company. I can’t wait to learn and add value to Harbert Management Corporation as a Financial Analyst Intern this summer in their Dallas, TX office!
